best affordable continuous blood pressure signal device?
< 1 min reading time

I am undertaking a research project in which I must obtain a continuous blood pressure signal from a specific patient group. I then need to analyse the signal hence it’s need to be continuous. I am looking for a more affordable piece of kit than I have been getting qoutes about (approx 20 thousand euro at the lowest.)

Hello Meabh,

I use BIOPAC Systems. They are very affordable and have turn key solutions for just about any application. The link below, may be useful.

Maebh, I am a director of a Dublin based company called dabl that specialises in software for blood pressure measurement. We might be able to help. Feel free to contact me.

Stephen Glassic Hello Meabh, I think you may need to be more specific in terms of accuracy requirements and monitoring environment (clinical, stationary or portable, etc.) and physiological monitoring location. Currently, I believe that in order to have accuracy, there has to be an intravenous sensor involved which may require a catheter and an external pressure transducer connected and calibrated to a monitoring device, and physical activity will affect waveform. If you need portability, that could be an issue. But it may also depend on what your regulatory and study requirements are. A cardiology specialist might possibly be able to help you find good options.

There are probably some wireless internal sensing options currently in development but I have not heard of anything being marketed yet that is clinically accurate.

If you have found something suitable for your purpose, maybe there is a leasing option available.

Méabh Loughman I beg your pardon everyone , embarrassingly enough I clicked enter before finishing the comment I wanted to post above. I want a non-invasive method of obtaining a blood pressure (or related) signal. The patient group I am hoping to obtain signals from are patients who have assistive devices implanted so their circulatory system is compromised already.

Craig -I have contacted Biopac as I am familiar with their Hardware. I have completed their lessons with the teaching kit and really enjoyed doing so , but I am afraid I cannot justify 20 thousand euro(I have to request any funding and of course the cheaper it is the easier it will be to get the funding). But I do thank you for your input.

Johnathan - Thank you very much I will be in touch.

Stephen - I beg your pardon , I understand that my requirements above were vague. Hopefully you can tell from the beginning of this comment a bit more about what I am looking to acquire. It will be used to collect data from patients in a clinical setting. I am afraid the patient group I am looking to get data from are generally quite ill so physical activity is out of the question as is cathederisation (I would not wish to put these people under any further circulatory duress and obtaining ethical approval would be a nightmare/impossible). Accuracy is of course important to me as I must justify the results I (hopefully) obtain but I understand there must be a trade-off. I have contacted two companies who have such machines but sadly they do not have leasing options available - if they did that would be ideal. I am working in conjunction with a clinician and he has never heard of such a device and we are all inquiring for information from various sources.

I would like to thank you all for your comments- I greatly appreciate all of your help.

Stephen Glassic You might want to consider using manual method. It is considered by many as the most trusted method for accuracy and consistency.

Méabh Loughman Hi All , I have gotten word that there is a machine available in a hospital here that I may be able to use. I must say Tensys does look fantastic and should my current circumstances not work out I will definitely be trying to get my hands on one of their machines. Thanks again everyone.
