How the Medical Intelligence Cloud will Revolutionize Healthcare
4 min reading time

“If you’re developing a device and it doesn’t integrate some kind of intelligence, you are contributing to the problem,” began Spyro Mousses PhD at his 10x Medical Device Conference talk in May.

His nine-minute talk and slides at https://medgroup.biz/Spyro

Dr. Mousses explained we need to transform your data into something useful, which is less likely if it doesn’t feed into an expert system or cognitive computing / machine learning system. It’s so impractical to consider data from each system independently that we don’t even collect it.

But “the little taste we’ve gotten from using genomic data to position cancer drugs, to using integrated image analysis, to look at cardiology, has taught us there is a massive amount of intelligence to individualize treatments.”

And machine learning algorithms are changing so rapidly that “everything you’re doing today in terms of software analytics is going to be obsolete in just a few years.” By ‘a few years’ Spyro means 2025 or sooner.

Dr. Anthony Chang, a 10x faculty alumnus and Chief Intelligence Office at Children’s Hospital of Orange County, is an early adopter. He wants to process echocardiograms, EKGs, genomic data, device-streaming data, so he can predict hemotherapy-induced cardiomyopathy from data.

The data sources not only stream from devices. Machine learning are beginning to integrate image data and decision support systems.

Spyro’s company, Systems Imagination, is working with Intel, Dell, and others to translate disparate data into unified multi-scalar models: Medical records, radiology images, pathology images, and molecular analyses including protein, DNA, and RNA.

So today’s your wake-up call. Integrate your data into machine learning systems or get left behind. Reaching Dr. Mousses might be a good place to start.

jayesh mistry, I’m not sure which hospital Spyro highlighted, he didn’t mention it by name.

Great talk – this hospital is probably all!

Implementing AI in the cloud is useful, but implementing at the edge is the killer app. Using AI to make decisions at the edge in real time is when we start to see the real benefits, like improved patient care and lower total healthcare system cost. Unfortunately today we don’t have access to all of the data needed nor do edge devices have the capability to communicate (even within the same vendor). I see solving this problem as the first step to an AI driven healthcare system. The good news is, groups like OpenICE (https://www.openice.info/) and the IIC (http://www.iiconsortium.org/vertical-markets/healthcare.html) are working on solving that problem as we speak.

Agree! Medizinprodukte oder Medizingeräte müssen heutzutage “intelligent” sein. Also vernetzbar, cognitiv, lernend, ggf. sprechend. Der Bedienkomfort für die Anwender wird dadurch gesteigert, die Patientensicherheit wird erhöht, Zeit gespart, Daten nur einmal erfasst, Daten weiter verwendet… Genial!

Algorithms are changing rapidly and we should change our customs ASAP to offer better solutions and reduce the risk of false diagnosis.

Spot on Joe – and Spyro! Much like IoT – data coming from medical devices, as well as unstructured data and images, are need for machine learning applications to add value and improve care. We should strive to get all devices producing data into advanced analytics use cases.

Data integration and health informatics is the future of healthcare delivery. It is interesting to know that manufacturers of medical devices and other health care products are thinking outside the box to strategically position their industry for the future challenges in healthcare. This is awesome!

Interesting opportunity in this emerging area: https://medstro.com/groups/the-philips-wearables-challenge/pages/home. There’s also a need for centralization/integration across different devices gathering data as well as multiple practices a patient may be affiliated with.
