What should I look for in a medical device public relations firm?
< 1 min reading time

So asked a group member. I replied, a smart request is “help me build awareness among decision makers who buy my products and services.”

And, perhaps, “and end users so they ask their doctors” – but I don’t recommend it for medical device companies.

How to do that?
> Content marketing on your own website
> Social media for amplification
> Potentially press releases (do they even work any more?)
> Outreach to media outlets in hopes of scoring an on-screen interview, podcast, or article.
> Outreach to secure speaking engagements (and recording them)

A fuller list at https://medgroup.biz/heck

So, asking you, the Group,
1. Do you agree with my take on effective PR today?
2. Do you agree marketing directly to patients rarely works?
3. Did I miss anything on the link I shared?

ALSO:

I’m moving forward with 10x London (Feb 17, 2020). Please recommend speakers and consider attending. Reach me at [email protected]

Make it a great week.🌞

Are we talking about PR or advertising? Advertising is paid for, PR is not. Some of these comments are mixing terms. A direct-to-patient radio ad is not PR. TV news talking about robotic surgery is PR.

Hi Joe,
1. I agree with your take on PR today.
2. Personally, advertising to patients could start one's dialogue with their physician.
3. I would ask readers to look at your fuller list at https://medgroup.biz/heck
Over my career having a good ROI (value prop) and becoming a client's trusted advisor has led to many referrals and new clients.
Best, Michael

Thank you,Michael Walsh, very appreciated. Re: advertising to patients, I think you have to be GE-sized to even think about it, unless you're selling direct for home care (a local wheelchair dealer, for example). I don't see any scenario where advertising a Smith & Nephew knee would influence the doctor or hospital one bit.

Medical device PR?

1) Nothing is more powerful than peer-to-peer, and that is “truest” in medicine;

2) Understand “labeling”, or you can end up in court or prison.

Could not agree more with Joe. The first guru talk few years ago at #SLUSH was the Rule No.1: "nobody cares about your product". So try and fail, try again and find your way.
As Hollywood classics said - "there is only one thing you stick to, which matters. - And what it is? -That is what you have to find out"....

Joe Hage - good point, albeit a bit depressing. Many companies fail to get enough input from customers, users and other stakeholders during the product development process. Could addressing this problem upstream make it easier to build awareness when you have a product to sell? Seems like it is easier to ask for input than a sales introduction. What’s been your experience?

Joe Hage interesting thoughts. I always find it interesting that nearly every commercial for medications on TV seems to have more and potentially worse side affects than what the medication treats. Is PR really about knowledge or is it more like propaganda ?

Right, Joe! Agreed! Figure out where your audience is and then get in front of them with content that provides value to that audience. I like the outreach advice. Getting booked on podcasts and interviews is crucial these days. Direct messaging prospects on social media works really well. Of course, right here on LinkedIn, Connect with your prospects and *add a note to the Connect invite telling them why you want to connect.

The only thing I would add is "...and their associates." One of my most prolific clients was recommended to me by a Regulatory professional I had meet earlier.
