What should I read to keep current with the industry?
5 min reading time

I’m often asked, “What should I read to keep current with the industry?”

Publications I faithfully read are:

Mass Device: Mass Device started out as a publication dedicated to the device goings on in, well, Massachusetts. But they’ve long since expanded to cover medical device news all over the world. They do a particularly good job covering the medical device tax, in my opinion.

MedCity News: What I like best about MedCity News is the variety of sources for their news. They’re kind of a hybrid: Founder Chris Seper has full-time journalists on staff and they also encourage medical device professionals to contribute as “MedCitizens.” I wrote a few pieces and then this “Great Big Group” happened, so I haven’t had as much time. (Sorry, Chris.)

FierceMedicalDevices: I used to read Fiercehealthcare more regularly (I still get their daily emails) but they recently added FierceMedicalDevices to their repertoire. I prefer that one because it’s more focused on our industry.

MD+DI: I’ve been reading Medical Device + Diagnostic Industry for years. I used to get it in hard copy, now electronically. It is written for original equipment manufacturers of medical devices and in vitro diagnostic products and they focus on the development, design, and manufacturing of medical products that comply with complex and demanding regulations and market requirements.
MDDIonline

Medsider: I enjoy Scott Nelson’s podcasts at Medsider . He finds some of the smartest players in the medical device industry and audio-records an interview for replay. (You can read a transcript as well.)

Beaker: The highlight for me is their weekly “BeakerBeat,” by Michael Justice at BeakerBeat. Beyond that, Beaker, fastest-growing recruitment solution for companies within the life sciences industry, provides a direct connection to the leading employers across the industry.

I visit the following from time-to-time:

PlasticNews – for innovative uses of plastics in medical device design, development, and manufacturing

MedicalDevicesSummit – news, tech, trends, reg, and expert opinions

MedicalDeviceDaily – Thompson’s business-focused medtech news

MPNmagazine – for manufacturers of plastics in medical and drug delivery devices, their components and diagnostics.

PharmaLive – pharma industry news from UBM Canon

ClinicalLeader – for clinical research, an online companion to Life Science Leader

How about you? Do read these? What did I miss?

++++++++++

Clinical Trials: How do you choose a clinical trial partner? Who even should be on the request for proposal?

Novella did a nice job with the questions and answers on piece: CToutsource

++++++++++

Focus on Clinical Research Organizations (CROs):

A survey to shape our discussion at 10x, please: CRO-survey

What drives your CRO decision? CRO-decision

Also

ISO13485 requirements on Component Parts

Concurrent validation

++++++++++

If you deal in implants or drug devices, you missed out last week. I attended the “Biocompatibility and Performance of Medical Devices” conference in London and met (among others) David F. Williams, one of the fathers of biocompatibility.

Your second chance: David is joining the faculty in May when they bring the conference to Minneapolis.
++++++++++

Make it a great week.

Leonard, there is something off about your link. It doesn’t take me to smartbrief.com/news/advamed. It just goes to smartbrief.com. When I type the rest in my browser, it gives me about 2 seconds to find my industry, and then it converts back to a general page.

P.S. I like FDLI’s SmartBrief, too.

I wonder how many people (what roles) need to keep up on the industry and how many people only need to keep on specific aspects. I’m in the latter group. I find that the industry pours itself into my inbox knee-deep every day, so that my problem is not keeping up on the industry, but wading through to find the stuff I need to keep up on.

Aritra Chatterjee
Assistant Vice President at HSBC Global Banking and Markets
Thank you Joe. Really appreciate this.

Heather Thompson
Owner at coffeeandpants.com
Hey Joe, thanks for the shout out.

Chris Seper
Senior Director of Content Strategy at The E.W. Scripps Company
Joe, you apologized to me but I need to do the same – both being late on posting a thank you and for my time NOT spent in this group. I am like you – high on desire to stay active here but short on time.

Patty Engel
Award-winning Sales & B2B Account Building and Management
Thanks to Joe for compiling the initial list and for everyone else for adding the others. Every industry has many resources. It’s not always easy to keep up with everything but it’s definitely good to have hands-on access to any and all information.

Roberto De Souza
Head of Business Strategy and Development at CardioID Technologies Lda
Thank you for sharing. Especially for “newbie” in the business … my case!

Pamela Kennedy, RN
Head of Business Strategy and Development at CardioID Technologies Lda
Joe- great listing. I also read QMed and MedDev Daily.

Donald Jones
Director of Intellectual Property at Apollo Endosurgery Inc
I like to visit MedGadget. There’s a mix of research in various specialty areas along with recent company product releases.

Camilla Storaa
Product Developer
Great value from this group, as always! Thank you!

I’d like to add FoodCourt on food regulatory issues that also has some updates on devices. It is hosted by member Marc Sanches.

Beth (Shery) Sisk
Copywriter/Editor, Marketing & Public Relations at Atlantic Health System
I would like to add Medical Design Briefs to the list.

I work to keep a mix of university/government research and current market technology as well as newsletters and webinars.

Annet Muetstege
Clinical Research Consultant at Applied Clinical Services BV
Thank you Joe for initiating this, very helpful. The ones I also check on regularly are:
– AAMI.org
– Medical News Today.org
– RAPS
– Clinica

The biggest challenge I find is to find time to read it all.

Evangélène L.
Technical Strategy Advisor
Thanks Joe. This is awesome. I read QMED Daily and H&HN Daily too – prob a little to far afield from MedDev.

Perry Mykleby
Customer Activation, Engagement & Retention
Joe, another great discussion.

I’ll add Medical Design to the list.

Joe Hage
Chairman at Medical Devices Group
@Julian, I created the short address MedDev-pubs to link to this conversation. The “updates” will take the form of comments added by group members.

That is, I don’t plan to republish and you’re welcome to check back.

Nick Woods
Director at Hill Woods Medical Media Ltd
Re: Medlatest I’d be more than happy to hear feedback from the group. Anything we can do to improve it? At the moment we try to make it a mix of straightforward medtech news, mixed with editorial and hopefully a degree of wit if we think companies are getting a bit too above themselves in the “claims” department. Really appreciate feedback.

Julian D. Dowden
Jr. Design Engineer at Tactual Labs Co.
Thanks Joe! I trust you will recompile and publish once the dust settles.

Advamed Smartbrief at smartbrief.com is a definite good daily summary of what’s going on in the medical device industry, for health care information systems,

Marita (Barraclough) Neilson

Great list, thank you!

Joe Hage
Chairman at Medical Devices Group
You knew I was going to forget one or two, didn’t you?

I get Dail-eNews from MDSI delivered daily and Repertoire was the primary magazine in which I advertised when I was back in industry. Apologies for the oversight, Graham & Co!

@Nick, yes, sorry I overlooked Medlatest. Another good one I visit.

D’oh!

Which other pubs should be added to the list?

Kris Simmons McCulloch
Marketing Communications Manager at TransEnterix, Inc
MedCity News is one of my go-to resources. I also follow AdvaMed for quick updates on product approvals and compliance issues. Thanks Joe for this comprehensive list!

Steven Xiaofan Bao
Sr. AI Product Manager at United Imaging Intelligence
Really useful resources! Thank you so much!

Timothy Ho
Retired. Not interested in long term commitment. Available if there is interesting project or challenging situation
Thanks.

BNA’s Medical Devices Report is also a publication worth reading to keep up on industry trends, as well as updates on what’s happening in Congress.
